HAITI

ABOUT HAITI

It seems like much has changed since I went to Haiti in 2015. As a high schooler, I was painfully naive and unaware of the political, historical, and cultural situation in Haiti. I traveled with my church at the time and spent ten days on a mission trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the surrounding areas. We spent our time volunteering at local churches, schools, and communities. I now realize that this venture served Eurocentric agendas and potentially harmed the communities more than we helped them. As always, I encourage you to do your homework before volunteering with any agencies and try to get as many perspectives as possible. I know I have made mistakes while traveling and have learned a lot and am still learning how to be a more conscious traveler! I would also like to acknowledge that Haiti is now on a Level-4 DO NOT TRAVEL advisory, so please do not visit this country. Out of respect for the communities I visited, I am not going to share personal photos with identifiable information included, but rather the environment.
