AUSTRIA

ABOUT AUSTRIA
There is a lot to love about this particular country, from its exquisite mountain ranges to its historic cities Austria offers it all. With heavy Germanic influence, the food and culture are unique and unforgettable. When riding busses or trains around the country, I had the Sound of Music playlist blasting the whole time which made the experience even more immersive. My time there was short and sweet and took place on a weekend excursion during my time studying abroad in Spain. I would love to go back someday (during the summer months!) and explore more of this beautiful country. There was a lot to see in Austria, but I spent the majority of my time exploring the city of Salzburg.
Travel Tips - Austria
Lodging
For my stay in Austria, I booked with Hostel Wien – Myrthengasse (HI) through Hostel World which was just fine! Truthfully, the property was VERY difficult to find (especially since I arrived in the dark) but it served the purpose of keeping me safe with a bed! Hostels are a FANTASTIC option for those who are budget traveling and do not plan on spending much time at their accommodation. Hostels are also a great way to meet fellow travelers and make some friends!
Transportation
I arrived at the Vienna Central Station via train from Hungary and took the bus from the station to a stop near the hostel. You can book trains through Omio which is a great service! I have used it quite a bit to navigate around Europe. Google Maps is a great tool for navigating around European cities, just ensure that you have the map downloaded or that you have data otherwise you will need to wait to find Wi-Fi for navigation. For additional transportation options, I would recommend Uber.
Activities
While I was only in Austria for a few days, I greatly enjoyed the day trip to Salzburg from Vienna. I don’t think that you need to schedule an excursion for this, and I would recommend booking your own transportation, such as a bus or train to get to Salzburg. Here are some of my “favorite things” from my trip to Austria:
-
Visit the birthplace of Beethoven
-
Eat a MASSIVE pretzel
